LC95A / Low Chair 1993–95
Maarten Van Severen
The LC95A is the most sculptural of Maarten Van Severen’s chair designs. Despite its visual simplicity, it is based on a complex technical construction. In his first sketches, made between 1991 and 1993, Van Severen pursued the idea of a continuous loop. Having researched different combinations of materials and types of hinges, he finally settled on an open loop made of a single sheet of bent aluminium. This open shape lends the chair visual lightness but also has another advantage: two rubber blocks between the overlapping ends of the aluminium sheet allow for a gentle resilience within the chair’s construction, thus increasing seating comfort.
