Valentine
Perry A. King; Ettore Sottsass
Launched by Italian manufacturer Olivetti in 1969, the mechanical typewriter Valentine achieved almost instant cult status. Its bright red case, brilliantly simple box, and excellent portability were revolutionary: at only five kilograms, it was fairly lightweight compared to most other portable typewriters, and the integrated handle meant it could be carried with one hand. Marketed as „an anti-machine machine […] for use in any place except in an office“, Valentine clearly hit a nerve in the 1970s. Its mechanics are based on an earlier model, the Olivetti Dora; only the case and box were new. Valentine was manufactured until 2000. Today the machine is a popular collector’s item to be found in most design museums.
