Hella Jongerius is noted for the way in which she combines factory-made elements with handcrafted details. In the Polder Sofa this is evident in the deep-buttoned detailing. Made from different materials, the large buttons are randomly patterned with holes and secured by hand with colourful thread. The successful Polder Sofa marked the beginning of a close collaboration between Vitra and Jongerius that not only led to further furniture designs, but also to a strategic project for the first colour collection to be used company-wide by Vitra. The title of the sofa refers to the flat, reclaimed landscape of Holland, criss-crossed by long dykes and drainage canals which create a flat, geometric pattern.
